deception

Despite her innate forgiveness, Nienna is no fool – she is aware when she is being deceived but she is more likely to ignore this fact and hope that eventually that person may have a turn around rather than immediately call someone out for attempting to trick her. Her hopefulness is what gets the best of her in situations like these.

She will often let someone fool her until it would be detrimental for herself or for the other party involved to let the lie go on any farther. In situations like this she is apt to disappear back into her halls rather than pass judgement on someone for trying to fool her. She will linger by herself until she feels she is ready to interact again. Should that person be able to pursue her there –

Well, Nienna is most likely to flee again. she is not good with confrontation despite the fact that she is one of the Aratar she has absolutely no desire to make use of her powers defensively or offensively and she will merely try to escape the situation she does not want to be in.

If this was the case she would likely take refuge with her brother in the Halls of Mandos and busy herself with aiding the sorrowful souls there.

[meme] Time, Judgement.
Time

by what should I measure you – ?
for you mean so little to me, but I am so painfully aware
of how short the Children of Ilúvatar’s songs are.

but that they could last a little longer
of perhaps I am selfish. with long life comes more
sadness. more hurt. but is there not also
       more opportunity to hope?

I am grateful I have no control over time,
for I have no concept of what I may do with it.

Judgement

this is a duty that falls to Námo –
the ability to judge is not in me.

I do not have the heart for such a thing
though I try. though there are whispers of
                          my foolishness

I have nothing but mercy and forgiveness,
I am not asked to judge.

everyone is aware of my verdict.

{{ if you bottled Nienna’s tears would they retain their purification qualities? These are the things I muse over.

Ice cream was the best thing humans ever invented.

The older Nienna gets//the more ages pass – the more she is willing to go amongst humans and attempt to help them more than simply watch. I’m talking modern times. So ages and ages of just watching have made her tire of being a goddess who does not act.

Nienna forfeits much of the abilities that she could be using ( such as her ability to institute growth or purify evils ) in favor of observation. She listens and watches much more than most Valar as her primary concern is the misery of others. People are her domain, though she may rule over the Halls of Nienna – her days there are spent looking outward. Viewing the plights of the people and mourning with them, rejoicing when they push through their trials.

When Nienna uses her abilities for other things, it limits how far she can see. As she is always watching she knows just how much she may miss in a few minutes. She would not be doing their sorrow justice to lack information on the beginning of it. She is adamant that someone must be surveying and paying attention to the plights of the people. If you have a conversation with Nienna, she is likely attending to that conversation – but she is still watching others. Because of this there may be times where she can grow teary-eyed or wistful despite there being nothing around that should be upsetting her.

Ilúvatar said to them : 'Behold your Music!' And he showed to them a vision, giving to them sight where before was only hearing ; and they saw a new World made visible before them, and it was globed amid the Void, and it was sustained therein, but was not of it. And as they looked and wondered this World began to unfoldits history, and it seemed to them that it lived and grew. And when the Ainur had gazed for a while and were silence, Ilúvatar said again : 'Behold your Music! This is your minstrelsy." -- Ainulindalë

The World was created through Music – and it can still be heard though it takes an astute Ainur to hear it as most notes have already settled. The children of Ilúvatar each have their own song, as music is how he had the Ainur bring things into existence in the beginning. This can also be observed but it does not give details.

The music of his children tells more the story of their lives through their emotions. It can be chaotic or calm. It can give insight to personality traits they attempt to hide deep from most individuals. Their songs are without words and they are painfully brief, often missed.

I venture to say that everything still has a song, however Ainur are typically limited to their affinity. For example, it may be very difficult for Ulmo to hear the mountain’s music. It is not where his affinity lies.

{{ I say this blog is multiship and it is – but I hope no one is under the impression that Nienna will.. really be romantically interested in people. I would like for it to happen eventually for the sake of character development but I believe the reason Tolkien left her on her own ( Ulmo is the only other unmarried Valar ) is because she is so terribly preoccupied with how the world is faring that she does very little socializing.

It is blatantly stated that she does not go where people are happy and content. She isn’t needed there. And when she assumes that comforting role she really is not giving anyone much opportunity to know her..

Not saying it is impossible, I just wanted a little psa about how it really isn’t Nienna’s priority. If it occurs on its own I would absolutely love that.

Though Nienna is a Valar and an Aratar at that, she will often refer to others as if they are of a higher status than herself – if this is not the case, she will likely call them something akin to “dear one” or speak to them like an old friend or as a parent might speak to a child.

The exception to this rule is other Ainur.

I think it goes without saying that Nienna is quick to cry – this does not always come in the form of tears. When she looks at someone she sees all their trials and tribulations. Often it may just be an incredibly forlorn look. If in the presence of others she can keep herself from growing too upset most of the time.

I think it is also important to note that though Nienna represents grief she also represents hope and resilience. She takes great pride in seeing people overcome adversity.

Nienna is not in a constant state of being upset or depressed. While she if always mindful of the suffering of others she also pays close attention to their successes and celebrates them.

This being said when Nienna cries it is often not reflected in her entire facial expression. She may be smiling as she cries, perhaps even laughing. It is an odd sight but she is very often crying out of sympathy while attempting to hold a conversation.

This is part of the reason interacting with mortals is difficult for her. She sympathizes with them so intensely it is hard for her to set aside their past and focus on the present conversation she may be having with them.
